Vitaly Milonov in talks about ‘Eurovision Boycott’
Vitaly Milonov is the legislator of St Petersburg and a prominent figure in Russian politics and is famously antigay. Milonov supported the controversial new laws against homosexual propaganda and has now written a letter to Russia’s Eurovision committee asking them not to send Russian musicians to the competition in Denmark as it is a ‘Europe-wide gay parade’.
Milonov was quoted in his letter saying that Eurovision would “contradict the path of cultural and moral renewal that Russia stands on today” and goes on to say “Even just broadcasting the competition in Russia could insult millions of Russians”. Milonov then moved his assault on Eurovision to Twitter and calling for all russians to boycott the ‘sodom show’. A second tweet revealed he later said that “completely boycotting” Eurovision would not be necessary if the “pervert from Austria” is excluded from the competition.
Milonovs reference to the “pervert from Austria” is Thomas Neuwirth who will represent Austria at the Eurovision in his drag persona ‘Conchita Wurst’.
The Russian state is obviously antigay, but why are they trying to ruin all of europe’s fun? Can’t they just participate in the competition keeping their personal views to themselves? Many countries kept their views to themselves during the Sochi winter Olympics without making a scene. Besides, hasn’t Russia got the memo that the Eurovision is the most flamboyant and ‘gay’ competition to date? Let the Russian party-poopers sulk whilst we revel in eurovisionmania.
