The London Lesbian & Gay Switchboard Received a Royal Surprise as They Celebrated Their 40th Anniversary.
During her 62 year reign of the United Kingdom Queen Elizabeth II has become a patron to well over 600 charities. Historically The Queen has never voiced her opinion when it comes to gay rights, however earlier this month (Thursday 6th March) ‘The London Lesbian & Gay Switchboard’ received a message of congratulations from the Queen herself during their 40th anniversary celebrations.
In her message the Queen said:
“Best wishes and congratulations to all concerned on this most special anniversary.”
Prime Minister David Cameron said:
“I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the London Lesbian & Gay Switchboard on reaching its 40th anniversary.
“Since 1974 there has been real progress towards lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. Voluntary organisations, such as the Switchboard, have made a vital contribution to that progress. The government continues to work to create a fairer and more equal society by removing the barriers to equality that LGBT people face.”
This nod of approval from our Queen and our Prime Minister is a sign that we are well on our way to equality to all in the UK, and is something we should be proud of.
